19.04.2019 PGNiG Termika: construction of a new EC Żerań unit at the halfway point
The most modern gas and steam unit in Poland will warm up Warsaw residents next year. Thanks to it, EC Żerań will be able to produce 4 TWh of electricity and 1.9 TWh of heat energy.
- I would like to emphasize that the construction of a gas-steam block and a new boiler room will measurably contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the residents of Warsaw and surrounding areas. The investment will make exhausted coal boilers be withdrawn from present use, and the new unit will meet stringent environmental standards. Thus, we implement EU guidelines and modernize our economy - said Krzysztof Tchórzewski, Minister of Energy.
- This is one of the most important ongoing investments in the PGNiG Group. The new block will consume about 0.5 billion cubic meters. natural gas annually. Thanks to gas and steam blocks fired by natural gas, which we build and run also in other heat and power plants in Poland, we reduce the emission of air pollutants, i.e. smog - said Piotr Woźniak, President of PGNiG SA, and added: - We are glad that the demand for gas in the country is systematically increasing. That's why Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo undertakes numerous investments in order for Polish society to be able to use blue fuel, which is an effective tool for reducing smog.
- The history of the construction of the investment in Żerań from the idea to the present state is already 10 years old. The acceleration of implementation took place in the last two years. It is worth recalling that one and a half years have elapsed since the cornerstone was laid, and from the entry of contractors for the construction of 16 months. The investment means for Warsaw: cleaner air - said Jarosław Głowacki, President of PGNiG TERMIKA SA.
The new unit at Elektrociepłownia Żerań will be completed in the 4th quarter of 2020. Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art technologies, it will definitely have a positive effect on the air quality in Warsaw and the surrounding area. Strengthening energy security of the capital agglomeration. After the start of the new unit, the production of electricity in CHP Żerań will increase by approx. 130%, from the current level of 1.7 TWh to 4 TWh. The installed electricity capacity of PGNiG TERMIKA will increase by approx. 110%, compared to currently used coal boilers, which will be withdrawn from use once the unit is started up. Heat production will amount to 1.9 TWh.
The investment meets the strictest European environmental protection criteria, i.e. the requirements of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and BAT requirements. In addition, the new gas and steam block will emit about 40 percent. less CO₂ compared to switched off boilers.
The planned annual gas consumption by the block is approx. 4 percent. current domestic consumption of this fuel.
The contractors of the investment are the Japanese consortium Mitsubishi Hitachi and the Polish Polimex-Mostostal. Its value is PLN 1.3 billion net (PLN 1.6 billion gross).
