22.06.2010 The Power Sector Increases its Efforts for Sustainable Development

On June 17th in Warsaw, another three companies: Fortum Power and Heat Polska, Lotos, and Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne Operator signed a Declaration on Sustainable Development in the Polish Power Sector during the Responsible Energy conference organised by Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo SA and PricewaterhouseCoopers, a consultancy firm.  

The Declaration's first signatories exactly a year earlier were as follows: Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo SA, EDF Polska, Gaz-System S.A., GDF Suez Energia Polska, Tauron S.A., ENEA S.A., and Vattenfall Poland Sp. z o.o.

This year's discussion was devoted to both social and economic challenges faced by Poland and the global economy. The programme of the conference also included practical workshops on the implementation of sustainable development principles at power sector companies.

The conference was opened by Ms Aldona Wiktorska-Święcka, the Prime Minister's Strategic Advisory team specialist and an advisor to the Mayor of Wrocław. She presented the key challenges for Polish economy, as set out in the Poland 2030 Report.

The discussion panel featured Minister Dariusz Bogdan, - representative of the Ministry of Economy, Mr Marek Woszczyk - Vice-President of the Energy Regulatory Office, Mr Tomasz Chruszczow - Head of Climate Change and Atmosphere Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment, Ms Daria Kulczycka - Head of Energy and Climate Change Department at PKPP Lewiatan, Mr Adam Ambrozik - Head of Entrepreneurship and Social Dialogue Department at the Confederation of Polish Employers, as well as representatives of the media: Mr Grzegorz Kiszluk - Editor-in-Chief of the Brief magazine, Mr Wojciech Kuśpik - Editor-in-Chief of the Nowy Przemysł monthly, and Mr Marcin Piasecki - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Gazeta Prawna daily.

Ms Iwona Figaszewska, the Corporate Social Responsibility Team manager at the Energy Regulatory Office, presented the results of this year's survey on activities for sustainable development in the power industry, carried out by the Energy Regulatory Office, and Ms Irena Pichola from PWC summarised the efforts of the Declaration's first signatories since the last year's conference.

Another panel featured Mr Philippe Castanet - President of EDF Polska S.A., Mr Jan Chadam - President of Gaz System S.A., Mr Grzegorz Górski - President of the Management Board of GDF Suez Energia Polska S.A., Jacek Piekacz - President of Vattenfall Poland, and Mr Marek Karabuła - Vice-President of PGNiG SA.

Special guests of this year's conference also included Mr Matthew Bateson - Energy and Climate Managing Director at World Business Council for Sustainable Development, who presented the WBCSD's views on challenges to sustainable development until 2050. Together with Mr Federico Merlo, representative of DuPont (WBCSD's member), he hosted the workshop entitled "Social and environmental problems from a global and local perspective - how to identify key social/environmental problems to be tackled by my organisation". Another workshop, entitled "Strategic approach to sustainable development and CSR. Step-by-step implementation of CSR principles - benefits for business and the environment", was prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The Responsible Energy conference is a unique event gathering together representatives of the power industry and offering an opportunity to discuss sustainable development issues in the industry. This year's meeting was attended by approximately 200 guests, including presidents of the largest Polish power companies, representatives of public institutions and industry associations, representatives of the media, employer organisations, non-governmental organisations and other persons interested in sustainable development in the power sector.
